What is PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) / PRF (Platelet-rich fibrin)?

PRP/PRF is a natural alternative to a dermal filler treatment. Instead of dermal filler we use the plasma and fibrin extracted from an individual’s blood to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the body as well as to promote healthy skin cell turnover.

Plasma and fibrin have a number of rich growth factors that have the capacity to regenerate skin tissue. In fact, PRP/PRF has been used effectively for a long time in sports medicine in order to heal sports related muscle and tissue injuries, as well as in the treatment of arthritis, and to help speed up the healing process of small fractures, amongst other uses.

PRP/PRF can be used to address fine lines and wrinkles, to add volume to targeted areas, it can be used to treat the area under the eyes, the nasolabial folds, as well as the forehead and jawline. It can also be used to rejuvenate the skin on the hands, neck, and décolleté.

What to Expect During Your PRP/PRF Treatment

At The Plastic Surgery Clinic and MD Beauty Clinic, we offer PRP (platelet-rich plasma) as a microneedling treatment more popularly known as the vampire facial, and we offer PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) as a filler treatment.

Whether you’re coming in for microneedling with PRP or a PRF filler treatment, you’ll have a vile or two of blood drawn from your arm. The blood will then be spun in a centrifuge and once completed platelet-rich plasma or platelet-rich fibrin will be separated from the blood. You’ll notice that fibrin and plasma are yellowish or gold in colour, not red like your blood.

We prefer not to use anesthetic for these treatments as there is evidence that suggests that anesthetic can reduce the effectiveness of PRP/PRF. That said, if you prefer to have local anesthetic applied prior to your treatment this is certainly something that we can do for you. We have many patients who have opted for local anesthetic and have still been satisfied with their results.

The vampire facial will proceed as a typical microneedling session which takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes, and in which your provider will penetrate platelet-rich plasma just below the surface of the skin via a series of tiny pins or micro abrasions using either a V2 Pen or by hand with a very fine needle.

There may be some minimal bleeding immediately following your treatment due to the tiny pricks. The treatment may require a few days of social downtime as your skin will most likely be red and have tiny red holes or bumps, all of which will heal within 1-3 days of your treatment. You may also have some bruising. Once healed you will see a notable improvement in the quality of your skin and these results will only continue to improve in the weeks following your treatment with the most noticeable results occurring after about a month.

PRF will proceed as any other injectable filler treatment. Your injector will inject platelet-rich fibrin expertly to targeted areas just under the surface of your skin. Just like after any injectable filler treatment you may experience some bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness at the sites of injection, but these symptoms will improve within a few days of your treatment, however some swelling can last for up to two weeks following PRF. The results of your treatment will be immediate and will continue to improve over the weeks following treatment and you will see optimal results within 4 weeks of your treatment.

The entire treatment time for either PRP or PRF will take approximately 1 hour, and this is in large part due to the time it takes to extract plasma and fibrin from the blood.

How Do I Prepare for my PRP/PRF Treatment?

We recommend that you drink lots of water before your treatment so that we can easily draw a good amount of blood. We also recommend that you avoid taking any blood thinning medication such as aspirin, and avoid drinking alcohol just to minimize any unnecessary bruising.

How Much Does Platelet-Rich Plasma / Platelet-Rich Fibrin Cost?

The cost of PRP/PRF will depend on the area that’s being treated and the type of treatment you are getting.

Microneedling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or the vampire facial costs $750 per treatment and $1950 for 3 treatments. The cost of treatments for the face and neck are $950 for one treatment or $2400 for 3 treatments.

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) costs $1200 for a Standard Treatment, which includes the treatment of two areas.

How Long Does PRP/PRF Last?

If you’re getting microneedling with PRP (aka the vampire facial), we typically recommend on average 3 treatments to start. After that, once a year maintenance treatments is all you’ll need to maintain your result.

With PRF as filler you will typically only need one treatment, and results can last anywhere from 12-18 months.
